Silverstone. No rain, but autumnal temperatures. The MotoGP riders were thickly wrapped on the grid. 24 degrees track temperature. So the warm-up lap had to be taken literally. Tires and brakes to bring to temperature and off it went into the race. But let’s take a quick step back before I write about the race. At Yamaha, after the suspension and the termination of the contract between Yamaha and Maverick Vinales, there is a little “tree change game”. Here now times the current state.
Probably in two weeks in Aragón again Cal Crutchlow on the factory Yamaha and Jack Dixon Petronas Yamaha will drive. If Franco Morbidelli does come back faster than expected, he will switch to the factory team. However, it is not planned for Aragon. Only at the San Marino GP (17 to 19.09.) Morbidelli should officially switch to the factory team, if he is recovered. The big surprise leaked out before the MotoGP race. The vacant seat in the Petronas- Yamaha team will be filled by Andrea Dovizioso. He will finish the 2021 season and also compete for the team in 2022. Quite a back and forth and great news for all Dovizioso fans. His departure last season wasn’t pretty, so it’s all the nicer that he’s back.
At Yamaha, things have been going high off the track. It’s a good thing they have someone with performance to talk about in Fabio Quartararo. Quartararo put in a world-beating performance at Silverstone today. In the fifth race lap, the Yamaha factory rider took the lead from Pol Espargaro and gave it no more. Completely unperturbed the young Frenchman reeled off his laps. No wobbles, no unnecessary duel. Simply a class of its own. Fabio Quartararo took his fifth victory of the 2021 MotoGP season at Silverstone. With a lead of 65 points, he was able to further extend his advantage.
For Marc Marquez, the race was already over on the first lap. With a cocky overtaking maneuver against Jorge Martin, Marquez sent them both into the gravel. The race was over for both before it started. Marc Marquez has overdone it. Once again. The Honda rider is still not back to his old form. He is apparently trying to compensate for this deficit with his aggressive style. Unfortunately, it does not go well in the second race as a result. Marquez risks too much. In the past he could stay seated, in the past he was still clever with all the aggressiveness. Today he can’t keep a cool head. The question is, how long will the race organizers look at this behavior before they intervene? Marquez not only puts himself in danger, but also others. Today he prevented himself from getting a good result and also took away from Jorge Martin, all chances of victory.
But the most beautiful scene today offered another. One who took his second podium after 191 GP races. One who today gave Aprilia its first podium in MotoGP. Aleix Espargaro. He made Aprilia overjoyed today and briefly upset the protocol in the ecstasy of joy. Because Aleix jumped the fence at Parc Ferme and sprinted to his family. Espargaro dedicated the race to his wife.
Silverstone despite cool temperatures warmed the heart at the end.
Let’s see what happens in Aragon.
